3D Printing

Grade Recommendations: 1-4, 3-6

What You will Learn

3D Printing is a premier class that teaches students how to create 3D models from an artistic and engineering standpoint.

  • Because the models will be printed, our instructors teach students what to consider in the construction of the model to produce the best-quality print.
  • Students will observe a 3D Printer during each lesson to learn proper 3D printing standards and processes, all while creating their own models that will be printed for them.
  • The course ends with students taking home their own accounts so they may continue modeling at home, along with at least 2 model prints they designed themselves during their time with us.

Program Learning Strategies

BSTEM supports a blended learning strategy which includes direct instruction, interactive instruction and experiential learning.

What is Direct Instruction?

Highly teacher-directed and among the most commonly used. This strategy is effective for providing information or developing step-by-step skills. It also works well for introducing other teaching methods, or actively involving students in knowledge constructions.

What is Interactive Instruction?

It relies heavily on discussion and sharing among participants. Students can learn from peers and teachers to develop social skills and abilities, to organize their thoughts, and to develop Rational arguments. The interactive instruction strategy allows for a range of groupings and interactive Methods. Interactive instruction requires the refinement of observation, listening, interpersonal, and Intervention skills and abilities by both teacher and students.

What is Experiential Learning?

It is inductive, learner centered, and activity oriented. Personalized reflection about an experience and the formulation of plans to apply learning to other contexts are critical factors in effective experiential learning. The emphasis in experiential learning is on the process of learning and not on the product.

How work

Course Content

  • Available for after school enrichment and summer camps

  1. Students will be introduced to the 3D printing software Tinkercad, as the class discusses what uses 3D printing has in the world. Students will be introduced to their first project.
  2. Students will begin working with Tinkercad and will learn how to make more advanced objects from scratch.
  3. Students are introduced to modeling from blueprints, just like an architect, game artist or animator would.
  4. Students will initiate the first two-class project of the program. Students will choose a building blueprint from three options and will model it in Tinkercad for printing.
  5. Students will be continuing to work on the building models and will complete them by the end of this class.
  6. Students will initiate their final project: a two-class project where they will model a character. For their character design, they will either choose between two blueprints or they will create their own blueprint for a custom character design.
  7. Students will be continuing to work on the character models and will complete them by the end of this class.
  8. Students will review all of the concepts covered in the program to reinforce their newly-formed foundation in 3D printing and modeling students will then be challenged to model an object they bring in, to learn how to model from real life using Tinkercad.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

Program Policies

With BTEM, creating a safe learning environment is our top priority. Because we are a supplementary educational program (after school), we do our best to coordinate with the schools, after school care programs, educational agencies, etc. that collaborate with our organization to provide learning services, and we endeavor to uphold the learning safety programs they have in place. Because after-school procedure can vary from school to school, we like to inform all parents of general procedures and expectations for participating in a BSTEM course.

Students are expected to participate in all class activities as presented in class. Please note that multiple missed classes can impact the student’s depth of retention of materials and concepts.

If you find that your child is having any trouble keeping up with assignments or other aspects of the program, make sure you let their teacher know as soon as possible. Please make sure to encourage your child to be proactive in informing their teacher when difficulties arise during the program so that we can help find a solution.

Students in this program are expected to maintain their adherence to their regular school code of conduct, participation, commitment to active learning and participation in the class and also integrity in your behavior in the classroom.
